With the world watching, South Africa almost made the perfect start to the tournament, but a shot against the post in the dying minutes ensured that the points were shared with Mexico.

Despite Mexico looking much the better side The Rainbow Nation went ahead, in front of 84,000 ecstatic fans, in 55^th minute with a goal worthy of the occasion. A series of slick passes from deep inside their own half culminated with a perfect strike from Siphiwe Tshabalala, who fired in a left-foot thunderbolt into the far corner of the net. However, Mexico's Rafael Marquez equalised 12 minutes from time to the deny hosts the win.

The match and opening ceremony was missed by Nelson Mandela, who was absent due to the death of his great-granddaughter, who was killed in a car accident earlier in the day.

Gerrard Given Royal Approval

England squad members took time out from training yesterday to speak with FA President, Prince William, via video link. Prince William told Steven Gerrard that his appointment as captain, in the absence of injured Rio Ferdinand, was "awesome" for him.

Gerrard said that he was very disappointed for Rio but was sure that the team would be ready to win by the time of the first match. There was a feeling of mixed emotions at the moment.

Ferdinand's is not the only high profile injury to hit the world cup teams this week. Didier Drogba is a major doubt for Ivory Coast having fractured his arm during a warm-up game, Mikel, of Chelsea and Nigeria, is out with a knee injury and the latest casualty is Dutch winger, Arjen Robben, who pulled up with a hamstring injury during a friendly match on Saturday.

There are now FIVE DAYS remaining until the start of the world cup!

MotoGP Japan - postponed

Due to the air traffic disruption in Europe caused by the volcanic eruption in Iceland Grand Prix Permanent Bureau has decided to postpone the Grand Prix of Japan which was originally scheduled for 25th April 2010.

The event will now take place on 3rd October 2010. All members with subscribed GIXr calendars will find the date changes automatically in their Outlook, Google or iPhone calendar. Latest calender information can be found on the MotoGP page

The Grand Prix Permanent Bureau and Grand Prix Promoter, Mobilityland Corporation, agreed to the change.

Formula 1 testing for 2010

The dates for testing sessions have been announced. The testing throughout February will all take place in Spain. The four session start at Valencia (Ricardo Tormo), 2 sessions at Jerez and a final stint at Circuit de Catalunya.

Dates have been added to the Formula 1 Calendar and will automatically update in the calendars of our registered members. Silverstone 2010 confirmed

As Silverstone gets confirmed as the venue for the 2010 Formula 1 grand prix they report a record number of ticket sales. The 17 year contract should give significant stability to Silverstone and generate a world class event.

The GIXr calendar for Formula 1 has been updated and we expect to add provisional race times, as well as details of practice and qualifying sessions, in the near future

Calendars for iPhone and Google

GIXr has launched a new version of the calendar that makes it easy for users to download all events from their selected category. They can add the calendar to Outlook, iPhone or Google calendar. The events will update automatically when changes are made to the event details.

The GIXr site is ideal for events such as Formula 1, that are likely to change.

Formula 1 - FIA moves Monaco forward a week

The 2010 grand prix at Monaco will now take place on 16th May. Other changes are likely to be announced between now and December.
